Robert Burns (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796), also known familiarly as Rabbie Burns, was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national bard of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scottish language although much of his writing is published in a Scottish "Dialect" of English, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. We celebrate his life and works with a Burns Supper.
The format of Burns suppers has changed little. The basic format starts with a general welcome and announcements, followed with a reading of Selkirk Grace. After the grace comes the piping and cutting of the legendary haggis. This is when Burns's famous "Address to a Haggis" is read and the haggis is cut open. At the end of the meal, a series of toasts, often including a 'Toast to the Lassies', and replies are made. Other traditional Scottish dishes are enjoyed and of course some fine Scottish Whisky is served through the night!
